Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to be shortlisted in the HSJ Awards 2017 for ‘Patient Safety’.

The awards, held in partnership with de Poel health+care, are one of largest celebrations of healthcare excellence in the world, recognising and promoting the finest achievements in the NHS, and showcasing them to the service’s most influential leaders. Entrants demonstrated outstanding practice and innovation, which help to safeguard and improve patient care, improve value and efficiency in healthcare and have been judged to be leading the way in this increasingly important area.

With over 1500 entries, to be shortlisted is a fantastic achievement for Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust and recognises the innovative work of the Scan4Safety programme to improve patient safety at Salisbury District Hospital. Some of the successes of the programme include the introduction of:

  • point-of-use scanning in cardiology and orthopaedics. All implants and consumables are now scanned to a patient, giving the Trust full traceability of what has been used with which patient, when. This means Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust can automatically trace products in the event of a future product recall. It also alerts clinicians if a product is expired, ensuring that only those in date are used.
  • scanning to positively identify patients when taking patient observations and when tracking blood products.
  • location numbers that help the Trust track patients and products to places.

“At Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, delivering an outstanding patient experience every time for our patients is at the heart of everything we do. It is a fantastic achievement to be shortlisted in such a prestigious award and this is testament to the innovative, cutting-edge work and progress that has been delivered to improve patient safety,  through the Scan4Safety programme.”

Lorna Wilkinson, Director of Nursing at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust

“The Scan4Safety programme aims to improve patient safety by uniquely identifying all elements that go into patient care across the NHS and so we’re very proud to be shortlisted in this category. We’re implementing standards which enable us to match the right patient, with the right product in the right place, every time.”
